Introducing... The Ginger Crisp.

Holidays always seem more festive with a signature cocktail.
This thanksgiving, I created what I'm calling a Ginger Crisp, which is basically a schmancy version of a classic gin sling. A very tasty, schmancy version. Apple cider made this taste and feel more seasonal, as did the ginger. And champagne is always preferable to seltzer...

Per drink, measure the following into a shaker or pitcher:
1 1/2 oz gin (and by gin, I mean Plymouth)
3/4 oz apple cider
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz *ginger simple syrup
3 dashes Agnostura Bitters

Shake, or stir. Store in the refrigerator to chill, or plan on adding a few ice cubes per glass. If chilling, remix before pouring.
Pour into a cocktail glass, about half- way. Top with Prosecco or champagne. Garnish as you desire- I chose an apple slice and piece of crystalized ginger, but a floating blackberry or a small spring of rosemary would also be lovely. And delicious. Consume. Repeat.

*Ginger simple syrup: Make your own by adding a few hunks of fresh ginger to your sugar and water mixture when dissolving on the stove. Remove pieces of ginger when ready to transfer. I keep mine in a Mason jar for use in home- made ginger ale, to pour over salted caramel gelato, for fruit tarts, etc. You'll love it.

Yesterday, I scored this Mid- Century key chain with Audio- Visual fob. It's gold tone metal and blue enamel, with a movie projector on the lower corner.
Condition is excellent, with very minimal losses. And keys would mar the surface, which would be a shame.
While normally not one to take vintage anything apart- unless damaged beyond the point of being salvaged in some way- I can't help but think this would make a rather cheeky pendant necklace.
You know, in honor of the older, cute but painfully shy guy in high school who kissed you outside of the auditorium, circa 1993.
At least I seem to recall that he was in the AV Club (or the Magnet version). But that's a different story.
So, fair readers, I leave it up to you. Do I list this key chain in my Men's shop (insert shameless plug here: RetroHommeVintage), or do I put the fob on a short to moderate length gold chain and smirk every single time I wear it? What's this gal to do?ShopRetroTrendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378492698732917084noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189729865798777033.post-36636124924902402082012-06-21T15:27:00.000-04:002012-06-22T11:20:08.266-04:00The great comment vs. compliment debate. It's a pet peeve of mine. A friend or acquaintance notices something different about you. A hair cut. Or different hair color. And their observation yields a comment along the lines of "You cut your hair."
Yes, captain obvious, I did.
If the noted observation is followed by a compliment, say along the lines of "Your bangs really frame your face well." or "I never noticed how blue your eyes were- they are lovely.", that's frankly swell, as well as downright appropriate.
Before you roll your eyes at my nit-picking, allow me to explain.
I've worked really hard on myself this past year.

I was a chubby child, which can probably be traced back to having a mother who was more interested in scoring drugs than feeding me. My grandparents were horrified that I'd, at the tender age of 3, sit at a table cupping my forearms around my bowl or plate of food protectively. And was taken from my mother's care (or lack thereof) soon afterwards.
Which led to being a chubby pre- teen. There was a wonderful summer of being thin. I was 9, and by that Fall, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. My body had been digesting my own fat storage. Thin and allowed to wear a bikini while at the beach? Yes. Sick as hell and close to death? Double bonus.
The grandparents I was living with blamed my pre- teen hormone- induced blood sugar ups and downs on me directly. And taught me that being Diabetic, as my father (who they would not allow me to see) was, was not only an embarrassment, but a sign of weakness.
My father died from complications of DKA when I was 12. I'd started living with my mother again at that point.
I went through several teenage "Taking insulin is a pain in the ass" episodes, but have become quite good at making my health a priority, except where my weight was concerned.
My pancreas does not produce insulin. If I don't take injections, I will die. That will never really change- I'll always need a source of insulin. It's not that I hide my Diabetes from people, it's just that I don't talk about it. Ever.
My weight, however, has yo-yo ed for years. In order to lose weight, I'd eat very little, which would work for a while. Let's face it, no one will just wake up with Gisele's body one day.
My frame is top heavy, with broad shoulders and a larger bust. Slimmer hips and a flat arse allowed me to rectangle off quite easily, as did a lack of exercise.
I got tired of not being able to walk into any store and find something to buy. Of having shirts pull across my breasts, and buttons strain at my waist. I was on the upper edge of classic ladies' sizing, wearing a 12 or 14 pant and a Large or XL top. My leggy 5' 7" frame was not only overweight, but technically obese. So I decided to change it.
I lift weights on a regular basis, walk a lot, sprint, spend tons of quality time on my elliptical (while watching embarrassingly bad TV) and eat every couple of hours. It works for me.
Do I miss quaffing gin? Yes. So I indulge a couple of times a week.
Enter a very flat and frighteningly firm arse, actual hipbones and a size 2 or 4 pant (same brands, for point of reference). I'll always be more top heavy, but am down three bra band sizes and at least one cup size. And I could store beverages in my collarbone area if lacking a water bottle. Which easily gets me into a size Small or Medium shirt. Dresses are still the devil, always way too big on the bottom, and I'd like a slightly trimmer waist area, but all in good time.
As of this morning, I am .6 lbs. from what I thought would be my final goal weight.
Last time I was at my endocrinologist's office, my chart revealed my goal weight to be one measly pound above the lowest weight he'd recorded for me. In 1997, when I was 19, and too poor for food. Working full time and carrying a full course load and closing The Black Cat every single night.
It's safe to say that if I still had my "skinny jeans" from that time in my life (Diesel black denim Wankers with 1970s style yellow contrast stitching on the back pockets and leg seams, size 29. Strange that I had enough money for fancy denim, no?), they'd be too big. And my new test for "too big" is when pants are buttoned and zipped and slip off my hips. I have a large bin of them under my bed. Overpriced Italian denim. Modern designer labels. Vintage designer labels. I doubt any can be salvaged by a tailor, but a few dozen pairs of pants remain just in case I find someone with amazing skill and an obsessive eye for detail.
At this point, I think I'd like to lose maybe another 10 lbs. And it may take a while. That's okay.
Do I have body image problems? Am I obsessed with being thin? No. I'm fit and healthy and muscular, with a 23.6 BMI. Which is lower than my endocrinologist's.
Friends have been for the most part complimentary, though some will always be the type to make observant comments and say nothing else. And some say nothing at all (which is okay).
While walking my dogs this morning, a nice neighbor who I wave at regularly but last had a conversation with maybe 10 months ago pulled over, told me that she and her husband comment to each other that I look amazing every time I walk by their house, and she thought it was well past time to tell me as much. The word "Amazing" was used eight times.
Maybe it's because I work in my basement most of the week. Or because the last person who commented that I'd lost weight was a leering, older man at a thrift store who was watching my try on a dress over my tee and shorts. "You look like someone I used to see here sometimes, but she was fat and you aren't." really isn't the panty- dropping observation/ comment you were going for, asshole. I'm sure the not fat version of me is now considered a total bitch for glaring back at him and not saying anything until he walked away, but c'est la vie.
There you have it- an insanely personal blog post from a very private person.
Next time you notice something about someone, don't just tell them. Compliment them. Because, be it weight loss, new glasses, or a new hair style, you will make their day.
After about an hour of baiting her with expired beef jerky (that's another story altogether!), I had a scared, dirty, malnourished, adorable, bat- eared dingo in my car.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
The vet assumed Sadie was nine months to a year old, thus her finding day is also her birthday.
In her previous "home", she'd been through more than I ever want to know. Signs of fight training. Beatings. Starvation.
To this day, she is still frightened of people walking with canes or umbrellas. And older women in long skirts. And has a reoccurring limp.
I will never know what the first year of her life was like- though I imagine the worst. And want the person or persons who hurt her to suffer more than anyone ever should.
In the past nine years, she has changed my life. For the better. She makes every single day awesome.
She is smart; easily counting to 6 when treats or toys are involved.
She snores. Loudly. Every single night. Often while pressed against my lower legs.
In fact, she is lying on the floor of my office and snoring as I type this.
She steals my yoga hat on a regular basis. While I'm using it.
She's the only dog I know who doesn't like peanut butter. She'll suck it off of apples or carrots and spit it on the floor, choosing to only consume the fresh fruit or veg.
She begs for bell peppers, seedless cucumbers, romaine lettuce hearts.
She loves to be cold, and roll in the snow. It's delicious!
She bosses around my other dog and cat as if they were her wards. And they let her.
She is technically a Labrador, Boarder Collie, Poodle, miniature Schnauzer mix. And that must have been one hell of a party.
Speaking of which, we're off to Five Guys for her yearly, celebratory bacon cheeseburger. Yeah, I'm that person, and I don't care who knows it.

This is my grandmother's kugel recipe. She was very pleased when I asked for it years ago- as I was hosting my first Seder and wanted to wow my mostly non- Jewish friends. They were thrilled with the kugel, and miffed by the frozen Boca Burger on the Seder plate. I was vegetarian at the time and would not visit a butcher for a shank bone.

It has been on the menu for nearly every event since. Requested for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's brunch, Ides of March brunch (togas optional), April Fool's brunch, and so many other festive, food centered events.

I'm probably breaking some sort of unwritten code for good granddaughters by posting this recipe, but you'll thank me.

What is kugel?

For the uninitiated, it's a slightly sweet, dairy laden noodle pudding. Now stop drooling.

Ingredients:
16 oz package medium egg noodles, cooked
6 oz Philadelphia cream cheese (Grandma specified! A block is 8 oz- feel free to use the entire thing. I do.)
6 eggs
1- 1/2 sticks of meted butter
1 cup sugar
2 cups milk
2 cans of apricot halves, drained (I buy the ones in fruit juice)
1 can (at least 12 oz, 16 is better) of apricot nectar (in a pinch, peach nectar can be used- it's usually easier to find)

Optional topping ingredients: (I forgo this step because the kugel doesn't need it. Though tasty either way.)
3 cups crushed corn flakes
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 stick melted butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
mix together and set aside

Directions:
Grease a large casserole dish- using the empty butter wrappers works perfectly.
Put cooked and drained egg noodles in buttered casserole, pour and stir in melted butter.
Cream the cream cheese with the sugar.
Add the beaten eggs and thoroughly mix together.
Add the milk and apricot nectar to the mix, pour over buttered egg noodles.
Arrange the apricot halves on the top.
Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, or the corn flake crack mixture, or both.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for at least 1 hour, up to 90 minutes or so- based on the shape of your dish.
If given a gentle shake, the pudding should be set. The top will brown slightly.

Honestly, it's the perfect comfort food. Chock- full of carbohydrates and fatty dairy, with a pleasant fruit flavor. Wonderful with turkey, garlic confit brisket, pot roast, even pork roast. Not to mention at any temperature as leftovers...
ShopRetroTrendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378492698732917084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189729865798777033.post-66991393257207665192011-11-10T11:30:00.000-05:002011-11-10T11:30:01.154-05:00Signage Now!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This past Friday was the 48th Annual Delaware Antiques show, so I decided to play hooky and peruse pieces I had no intention of buying.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Once I stopped drooling on the Deco jewelry - and that took quite a while - I explored the other booths.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Many of my favorite finds of the day were antique and salvaged signs. Of course, I'm at the "I don't need more furniture, but wouldn't mind more artwork." stage of decorating my 1961 ranch house. At least until that next piece of Mid- Century furniture is unearthed...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Some of the dealers looked like they'd strangle you if you attempted photography. At other booths, the lighting was less than helpful.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Enough blathering. Signage now!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">By now, you've grown used to my obsession with retro and vintage print ads with, shall we say, questionable copy and/ or imagery.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Even I was shocked into momentary silence when reading the copy on these two SEGA adverts.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Some guy will look awesome in these CRAZY wool plaid bell bottoms, with cuffed hems. 37" waist, 32" inseam, with a 2.25" cuff and 1.5" hem so there is room for lengthening if needed. Did I mention 24" belled leg openings? Coming soon...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Not to mention these custom- made burgundy leather Cowboy- style boots, circa 1970s. I can attest, they are about a modern US Women's 7 1/2 B, as they fit me perfectly. I do have the willpower to list these for sale. I do have the willpower to list these for sale.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Coca- Cola fans are in for a real treat! I've recently unearthed a handful of vintage trays, the earliest one dates to 1921. Shown above is a selection with winter scene (because I miss snow and long to wear outerwear) from 1941. I have a bit of artist research to do, but these trays will also be listing soon.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I've also changed my shop avatars. Mr. McMoosey is still a beloved part of my office and will be dressed up seasonally. Sometimes inflatable deer heads simply need some time off. Keeping with the deer theme- with a found antler and copper pipe fitting, which will be seen in photos of hanging items in the near future.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So as not to spoil you with too much info all at once, that's all for now. Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Hello everyone!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">It's been a whirlwind (no pun intended) couple of weeks since my last blog post.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I live in Maryland, and on 8/23, there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in nearby Virginia, which was felt as far away as parts of Canada. I'm an east coast gal, so the first (smaller) one had me thinking there were jets overhead. I went outside and saw nothing- about then my brainwaves computed "earthquake". I got back inside and the second, much larger and longer quake hit.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">No damage here and very little in the larger metropolitan areas nearby. I must say, it was kind of cool.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Do I want to experience an earthquake everyday? Absolutely not. Do I realize they can cause catastrophic damage. Hell yes.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Mother nature wasn't done yet- Hurricane Irene ripped up the coast and left us drenched throughout most of the weekend. While most of the rain and high winds were gone by Sunday morning, so was the power. Luckily, it was out for about 12 hours total. Not so lucky? Comcast services being down for 5 days. I was without Internet, phone or cable until late Wednesday afternoon (and going slightly crazy not being able to work). Once everything was restored, responding to inquiries and updating the shops was the first item of business.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So what's on the plate for this week? I'm starting to get Fall items online.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">It's hot outside. And humid. Even my pooches are miserable during our short, sauna- esque walks. Unrelenting heat of this type calls for evasive action- not just cocktails, but popsicles. And since I'm probably the only person who never made popsicles from scratch, a mold was purchased. Shown above is my first attempt, chopped nectarine and orange juice pops.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">And, yes, I know how to spell "great". Keeps at least two weeks, not that it will last that long.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">It's tart and tangy, with a bit of a kick (yes, just like me). Wonderful on salads of any sort, from mixed micro herbs to Boston lettuce. Wonderful on a slaw- type salad or on blanched veg. Or grilled veg.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Reminiscent of the classic dressing used in French restaurants (not the goopy orange crap, geez!), this is light and wonderful.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The actual recipe:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">equal parts rice wine vinegar, hazelnut oil and lemon juice
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">1 clove of garlic per 2 oz of total liquid volume (more or less to your taste profile)
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">sea salt

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Crush and mince garlic.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Add to jar with generous sea salt and shake.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Add equal parts of each liquid (based on jar size) and emulsify.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Try not to drink directly from the jar.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Store in fridge is not immediately consumed.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">And now, for the apology you've all been waiting endlessly for... I have once again pushed this blog aside as soon as I got busy. And I will continue to attempt to be a better blogger. But there are so many things to write about. Like my new Google+ obsession. And my 12 year anniversary. My new exercise plan. Summer in general.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Until next time, please check out my new shop buttons, way up on the top right side. Make one with found objects.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I'd coveted this antique barrel with glass top for ages. After borrowing it several times during one summer, it was given to me - on permanent loan.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Thanks, Eleanor!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The only issue? The glass wasn't secured and would sometimes shift around. Not ideal with dogs running about and occasional visiting kiddos.

Half a double is one 12" hot dog split in half, inside of half of a foot long roll- basically two 6" hot dogs in a 6" roll with some yummy additions.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This is George. Or Georgie. Or Georges. Or Handsome George Francis Rufus Cooper.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This is George in the back yard. You can no doubt spot poison ivy, as well as loads of other living things (bonus points for spotting the soccer ball). For those that know me, my constant state of poison ivy infection during warm weather months probably makes a lot more sense.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I adopted him in July of 2007 at the local <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">SPCA<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">. He had been dropped off the previous October as a 5- 6 month old puppy, according to his vague intake papers. By someone who lived in an apartment and wasn't allowed to have pets.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Given his approximate age, it seemed a Spring birthday was in order, probably in early May. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a stripey dude in tow is pretty awesome. This year, the official celebration will be on Saturday, culminating with an outdoor lunch at a local <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Five Guys<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">.

For those that are curious, he was labelled a pit pull/ German Shepherd mix. He howls, bays, yodels, yips and beat- boxes like no dog I've ever known. He's probably a Plott Hound with some German Shepherd and who knows what else mixed in for good measure.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So I've just blogged about one of my dogs. Am I a crazy dog person? I don't think so. I do think that I'm lucky to have George (and Sadie, the topic of earlier posts) in my life, because they make every single day awesome. No matter what.

And now, for the slightly preachy statement: Adopt your pets. Used animals rock!

Too much responsibility? The economic downturn hit animals too. People lost their jobs and their homes, which means a lot of animals lost their families, homes and security. Please consider donating food, supplies, money or free time to your local animal shelters.
ShopRetroTrendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378492698732917084noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189729865798777033.post-44449183038903776642011-04-28T18:02:00.000-04:002011-04-28T18:02:10.344-04:00If the clothes fit...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">article<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> in the NY Times hit home with me (and thousands of other women, no doubt). This chart shows some of the "sizeism" in fashion- and the variations in sizing aren't always cost- driven.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Another pet- peeve? The naming of styles. How am I supposed to remember that the "Charlie" or "Hooker" or (insert random name here) jeans are panty- bearing rise and no hipped, with skin tight legs? And while I'm probably technically curvy (though more on the top than the bottom)- no "curvy" style of pant has ever fit my 33" inseam - in flats, no less- or my fairly flat butt.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Sure, I wear tons of vintage clothing, so I expect a huge variation in sizing from yesteryear's styles to modern clothing. But it would be nice to walk into a store and be within a two size range. Until then, I'll stick with the brands that (usually) work for me. And plan on taking armfuls of basics into fitting rooms.

Do you buy based on that little number on the tag or based on what fits?
ShopRetroTrendhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02378492698732917084noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189729865798777033.post-28616976762469312672011-04-20T20:00:00.001-04:002011-04-20T20:00:00.864-04:00Ready for a Spring Fling?
