Updates and whatnot

Photo completely unrelated to a short and rambling blog post.
Me in high school, circa 1994. Can't remember who took this- it was a project in our photography class and he gave it to me after it was graded. My funky (and quite short) haircut outline (think Justine Frischmann of Suede and Elastica- I was lucky enough to see Elastica play their very first US gig at the original 9:30 club in DC), giant 1960s Omega watch and at least three layers of vintage tops got random guy an A+ grade. Stumbled across this while looking for a different scan but thought it was cool. Now ending the longest caption EVER.

I've succumbed to the dreaded plague and feel all sorts of awful.
Had a fever over the weekend, in addition to a very sore throat, swollen sinuses and overall bouts of lethargy.
Feeling a bit better and am slowly returning to normal. Still sneezing, nose is chapped from repeated blowings, voice is slightly hoarse from so much coughing.

Also spending a lot of time planning the future of the Etsy team I recently took leadership of.
I've always joked about world domination through vintage clothing- now it seems within reach!
Another sign of world domination- this blog now has 200 official followers and countless (mostly because I feel too lousy to check my stats today) readers around the world. Also, I'm huge in South Korea. It's my second highest country following.

Enough for now, I'm out of tea and tissues.
I'll find that other photo for Wordless Wednesday.
Don't forget to check out my new Tumblr page, where I've challenged myself to use 30 different purses in 30 days. Non- stop excitement, I know.
No XOXO for you guys- I'm too sick. Enjoy your afternoons!

Ch... Ch... Ch... Changes (And, We Have a Winner!)

Imagine David Bowie singing the title.
There, that's better.

So much for blogging on a regular basis.

Something you should know:

I've been promoted to captain (or HBIC) of the Vintage Market Team. Previously, I was the leader in charge of promotions, which included overseeing social media interaction for the team, (Twitter, Facebook, blog) and sales events. Connie, known to many as AntiquesGaloreGal, was our leader for about 18 months and has decided to step down.
I've got very big shoes to fill- she was always available with kind encouragement and words of support.

Hence my inclusion of this photo. This WWI era signed litho hangs in my bedroom. There is something about the fearless dignity of the subject- her selflessness and caring nature make her beautiful.

Connie, you will be missed. I hope I told you enough- you and your time were always very much appreciated by me, as well as the rest of the team.

Here's to a bright future for a wonderful team of vintage sellers!

And what all of you have been waiting to read (okay, the four of you who entered, in spite of the hundreds of RTs)- the contest winner announcement! The winner of the four MCM glasses is... MartyrsAndManiacs (Great name!). Contact me with your address and your glasses will be in the mail.

Until tomorrow... when Wordless (or Wordful, if time allows) Wednesday (probably) resumes.

Shopping Slump + Coupon Code = Weekly Round-Up

I am a good half- Hebe. And I shop for a living. So why is seasonal shopping so hard this year? Barely made it through Hanukkah with the "Let's just exchange one big gift this year" shtick (the iPhone 4 rocks, btw!), but Christmas is looming. Everyone seems to be scaling back, which is fine by me. There is little I need or want.

So while my decorations are up and home- made lemoncello is ready to distribute to friends, I still have a lot of present buying to do. From online stores that will deliver quickly. Of course, lots of purchases are arriving via Etsy, in clever packaging and with thoughtful notes. This makes me strive to avoid big- box stores as much as possible - I'd rather support handmade and vintage sellers.

Are you suffering from a holiday shopping slump too?

Maybe this will help:
This weekend only (starting, um, now) use coupon code "15offyay" in any of my three stores (retrotrendRetroHommeVintage and ObjectRetro) for an additional 15% off.
Many items are already 20%- 25% off for the holiday season, so this is an added "Thank you!" bonus for my loyal blog followers (that's you, guys!), Facebook fans and Twitter followers.

I've used the Etsy on Sale API a few times to create sales and love the results. So it was thrilling to receive an e-mail from one of their founders, letting me know I'd been featured on their blog. That creamy canvas speedy bag? Right here.  Thanks for the feature!

Well, it's 5:08 pm here, which means my work day is over and cocktail hour has started without me. Have a wonderful weekend.
P.S.- If the sugar cookies turn out okay this weekend- there will be photos galore to share!

Happy 9.02.10 Day!

Admit it, you watched Beverly Hills, 90210.
You can blame it on your sibling or BFF but you've seen the show.
I'll start, reputation be damned. I did watch the show. Not every week, not after the first couple of years, but I did watch it. There was a time between my snobby, elementary school brat years and my "Alternative" teenage years- which coincided with the early 1990's.
Remember everyone arguing over who was cuter- Dylan or Brandon? David and Steve? Not so much. Come on, there was the smart but not classically pretty girl, the pretty and popular girl, and the good friend.
So Miss Brenda Walsh rocked the boat with her dark hair and elitist attitude.
But every generation has a show or movie that addresses teen issues in a current way- and for us just barely thirty-somethings, 90210 was that show.
Drug use, drinking, gay rights, abortion, rape, pre- marital sex, AIDS- not the daily happenings of a 14 year old but this show did facilitate open conversations between parents and children.
Brenda trying to dye her hair blonde? Neon leggings? Poke fun all you want- this show was loved by millions and was on the air for a decade.

As such, I've created an Etsy treasury to honor this like totally special day. It was difficult to find examples of the fashions I clearly remember but would rather forget.

That's me, front and center. In Hypercolor. Summer of 1991, with my camp BFF in Body Glove. We'll just pretend my jeans weren't rolled, thanks to signage.

So head to the Peach Pit and order a milkshake to enjoy with friends.

Items we love! Contest

Two quick updates:

I am holding a contest on my Facebook fan page!
If you comment on the FB fan page post (from Monday, August 9th), telling me which item (or items) you'd purchase if you had $50.00 to spend at RetroTrend and/ or RetroHommeVintage, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a one- time use $50.00 credit. The contest ends on Friday, August 13th at 12 noon EST. The winner will be announced Friday afternoon.

Happy Treasury Tuesday! Maybe I'm not so hard to shop for is a list of items I wouldn't mind receiving. It includes some stellar vintage, upcycled and new items, from 16 fantastic Etsy sellers.

Have a great afternoon!

Etsy Treasury mention

I got another Etsy.com treasury mention for an awesome retro polka dot Halston swim suit.
Thanks to Natalie at RemindersOfThePast for putting together this great treasury and including this killer swim suit!

Heat and humidity are still in the air but Back to School and Fall fashions are jsut around the corner. I sold a favorite summer staple this morning- a killer mid century swim suit and matching cover-up http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=18575337 Look for more funky yet functional vintage to follow as we fall into cooler weather.
